From Richard I to Richard III: Wagner, Strauss, and Questions of Influence – a Zoom Meeting with Professor John Muller

Sat, 06/13/2026 - 1:00 pm - 2:30 pm

Here is a link to the archival recording of this Zoom talk. https://youtu.be/dav-uOcUfWw NOTE THAT THE FULL LECTURE IS NO LONGER AVAILABLE. This link provides only the pre-talk announcements and post-talk Q&A.

Timed to coincide with San Francisco Opera’s production of Elektra, this talk will examine the influence of Wagner on Richard Strauss and his music. Frequently seen as the successor to Wagner, Strauss nevertheless developed his own very personal style as he dealt with the “anxiety of influence.” Join us for John Muller’s examination of this relationship.

John J. H. Muller IV is a faculty emeritus of The Juilliard School, where for many years he taught a wide variety of courses in the music history department. From 2010 to 2019, he presented lectures for the Wagner Society of New York at the Bayreuth Festival. Prof. Muller has also been a noted speaker for the Metropolitan Opera Guild and the American Psychoanalytic Association. His essay on Parsifal appeared in the book, “Wagner Outside the Ring”, and a chapter on Tristan und Isolde was included in “Opera on the Couch”, published in 2022.
