Flying Dutchman Webinar

June 6, 2020 - 8:00 am

WEBINAR!  Join the Wagner Society of Northern California June 6th at 1:00 Pacific Daylight Time as Professor Scott Foglesong will recount Richard and Minna Wagner’s harrowing flight from Riga.  This is a webinar so you will be able to join this program in the comfort of your own home via the internet.

In 1839, Wagners fled Riga on the Thetis, a smuggler’s ship. Richard and Minna dreamed of getting to Paris. Riga’s farewell to them was an enormous sea storm. It was this storm that the composer commemorated later in the famous overture to the opera The Flying Dutchman. Using Wagner’s own writings and music, Professor Foglesong will trace the route they took, followed by a dissection of the overture’s themes and orchestration.

The Wagner Society of Northern California will invite members to join a Zoom Webinar one to two weeks in advance of the event using member e-mail addresses on file. The e-mailed invitation will include instructions on how to register for the webinar. Follow the link within the invitation to register. Automatic reminders and sign in information will be automatically issued to registrants as the webinar date nears.

Biography: Scott Foglesong is a pianist, musician, teacher, writer, cat-lover, music history devotée, occasional computer geek and sometime programmer. In addition to San Francisco Conservatory of Music, Foglesong teaches in the Fall Freshman program at UC Berkeley and the Fromm Institute at the University of San Francisco.
