Flying Dutchman Webinar

June 6, 2020 - 8:00 am

WEBINAR!  Join the Wagner Society of Northern California June 6th at 1:00 Pacific Daylight Time as Professor Scott Foglesong will recount Richard and Minna Wagner’s harrowing flight from Riga.  This is a webinar so you will be able to join this program in the comfort of your own home via the internet.

In 1839, Wagners fled Riga on the Thetis, a smuggler’s ship. Richard and Minna dreamed of getting to Paris. Riga’s farewell to them was an enormous sea storm. It was this storm that the composer commemorated later in the famous overture to the opera The Flying Dutchman. Using Wagner’s own writings and music, Professor Foglesong will trace the route they took, followed by a dissection of the overture’s themes and orchestration.

The Wagner Society of Northern California will invite members to join a Zoom Webinar one to two weeks in advance of the event using member e-mail addresses on file. The e-mailed invitation will include instructions on how to register for the webinar. Follow the link within the invitation to register. Automatic reminders and sign in information will be automatically issued to registrants as the webinar date nears.

Biography: Scott Foglesong is a pianist, musician, teacher, writer, cat-lover, music history devotée, occasional computer geek and sometime programmer. In addition to San Francisco Conservatory of Music, Foglesong teaches in the Fall Freshman program at UC Berkeley and the Fromm Institute at the University of San Francisco.

About our webinars:

Because of the pandemic, we cannot meet in person. Until we are able to resume our meetings the Society will produce a series of webinars.
A webinar is a web-based seminar. Registrants will be viewing from the safety of their own home.
WSNC will send an e-mail invitation to the members approximately two weeks prior to the webinar – the first of which will be Saturday June 6th at 1:00 p.m.  The invitation will have an imbedded link and the recipient will click that link to register for the webinar.
Reminder notices will also be sent out to registrants.
Prior to the the webinar, registrants will receive an e-mail with a electronic “ticket” to the webinar. Clicking the link withn the e-mail will direct you into the Zoom website where the webinar will take place. At that time, you will wait for the webinar to commence. Sit back, relax and have a beverage while you wait.
The webinar will be approximately 1 hour long and there will be Q & A.  Participants can send questions through the webinar platform. Due to time constraints, it is possible that not all of the questions will get answered. We will do our best to adhere to a 90 minute presentation.
