The defense rests!

La Scala General Manager Stephane Lissner defended his choice of opening the 2012-2013 season with Lohengrin. He chose Lohengrin for opening night primarily because Daniel Barenboim, one of the world’s finest Wagner conductors, was available to conduct. Further, Lohengrin was chosen because Wagner’s Bicentenario occurs in May 2013, before the Bicentenario of Verdi which is in October 2013.

The La Scala 2013-2014 season will open with La Traviata conducted by Danielle Gatti. The season 2012-2013  features six Verdi operas:  Aida, Un Ballo in Maschera, Oberto, Nabucco, Macbeth and Don Carlo and in 2013-14 La Traviata and Falstaff are added.  In 2012-2013 Wagner represented with 6 operas: Lohengrin, a full cycle of Der Ring des Nibelungen and Der fliegende Holländer.

It all seems very fair. Both composers are well represented.
