On January 22, 2015, Sweden announced a redesign of their 500 crown (approx. EUR 55/USD 60) bill. It shows the great Birgit Nilsson in one of her signature roles, Brünnhilde in Wagner’s Die Walküre on the stage of ‘my’ opera house. There are a few people who are offended by the representation of anti-semite Wagner on their money. I, on the other hand, applaud Sweden not only for honouring one of the greatest singers the world has ever heard and seen, but also for the statement it makes: that opera and classical music are indispensable in its culture.
