Famed mezzo soprano Irene Dalis died on December 14th after a long illness. Dalis was a noted Wagner and Strauss singer who sang often in Bayreuth and San Francisco as well as every major opera company in the US and Europe. She was a noted Kundry, Ortrud and the Nurse in Die Frau Ohne Schatten. Her break-through role was Princess Eboli in Verdi’s Don Carlo.
Irene Dalis’ greatest legacy is the founding and stewardship of Opera San Jose in her home town of San Jose, California. She mentored many young singesr through the Opera San Jose Residency Program and the Irene Dalis Vocal Competition.
Irene Dalis was an Honorary Member of the Wagner Society of Northern California.
