Frankfurter Allegemeine reports that the Financial Director for the Bayreuth Festival, Heinz-Dieter Sense, has reviewed the proposed production designs for the 2016 Parsifal and determined that it is not possible to produce the opera within the established budget. The costumes, elaborate unfolding sets and production were deemed too costly.

The controversial artist Jonathan Meese had been engaged to direct Parsifal. Meese is known for his provocative and controversial art installations and his enfant terrible grandstanding for media attention. Meese’s contract was cancelled and the search is on for a new director for Parsifal.
