That grabbed your attention! The seminar is entitled “Carmen and the Consequences” but this is no ordinary weekend seminar/retreat. Opera at Oakhurst seminars are led Professor Simon Williams and WSNC members rave about these annual opera events.

In this years’ offering Professor Williams will discuss the public reception of the opera Carmen, which was something of a scandal. But the talks will move beyond Bizet’s great opera and discuss the novels of Zola, de Maupassant and Henry James, the plays of Ibsen and Strindberg and the psychoanalysis of Siegmund Freud.

Williams will also consider other French operas such as Manon (1884), Werther (1892), Thäis (1894) and Louise (1900).  Italian verismo operas will also be included, among them Cavalleria Rusticana (1890), Pagliacci (1892), Manon Lescault (1893) and La Rondine (1917) along with post-Wagnerian operas Salome (1905), Elektra (1909), Tiefland (1903) and Jenufa (1904).
