It was announced today that Patrice Chereau died at the age of 68 from lung cancer. Chereau broke new ground with his Bayreuth Ring production in 1978.
Alex Ross states: “”In his best work, everything was charged and nothing was forced: even the smallest gestures and the most marginal characters contributed to the unfolding of the drama,” Chereau famously and infamously changed the setting of Wagner’s epic from Nordic forests to a modern-day power plant, with it future Ring stagings were transformed.
