Franz Welser-Möst just resumed conducting after a month-long absence and Antonio Pappano is off the podium until next year. Both conductors have suffered bouts of what most of us know as “tennis elbow”. This is no laughing matter though. With two of the world’s noted conductors off on the injured list (not to mention James Levine being out for over a year now) it’s tough to imagine who can fill in.
Peter Schneider stepped in for Welser-Möst during the Vienna Staatsoper Japan tour. Maestro Pappano is being replaced by Ryan Wigglesworth for the upcoming revival of The Minotaur at Covent Garden.
