Elektra Star has her first Brünnhilde on the books
In a soul-baring article in the most recent issue of Opera News, dramatic soprano Christine Goeke discusses the ups and downs of her career as a lyric soprano turned dramatic soprano. In Wagner roles Ms. Goerke has sung Ortrud, Gutrune, Kundry and recently in New Zealand concert performances of Walküre as Brünnhilde with the fantastic Simon O’Neill as Siegmund.
Ms. Goerke has also sung the roles of Norma, Chrysothemis, Ariadne and Eboli and in her early career she was known for Mozart and Handel roles.
On October 6 Christine Goerke opens the Lyric Opera of Chicago 2012-2013 season in the title role of Elektra.
Last year in Madrid Ms. Goerke alternated in the title role in Elektra with Deborah Polaski. To paraphrase the local Madrid newspaper article, the critic stated that it was remarkable to hear the role of Elektra sung by the great interpreter of this generation alongside the great interpreter of the next generation.
