Mein Schirm! Mein Engel! Mein Erlöser!
April 16, 2012
The new production of Lohengrin had its debut in Berlin at the Deutsche Oper on April 15th. Led by Deutsche Oper GMD Donald Runnicles, the cast included Ricarda Merbeth – Elsa; Petra Lang – Ortrud; Gordon Hawkins – Telramund and Albert Dohmen – Heinrich. Marco Jentzsch was originally scheduled to sing the role of Lohengrin, however Klaus Florian Vogt stepped in at the last minute to sing what has become his signature role.
The new production was designed by Kaspar Holten who is the newly appointed artistic director of the Royal Opera House Covent Garden. Holten also directed the Copenhagen Ring which is available on DVD.
Deutsche Oper is replacing all of the Götz Friedrich Wagner productions with new ones for the 2013 bicentenary. From the photos it seems that the swan knight is really a swan.
Petra Lang performed the role of Venus in Tannhäuser in San Francisco and will return to perform the role of Ortrud this fall in San Francisco Opera’s new production of Lohengrin. We will all remember Gordon Hawkins who was the magnificent Alberich in the recent San Francisco Opera Der Ring des Nibelungen.
