Professor Hans Vaget

“Hoechtest Liebes-Lust: Tristan, Isolde and Ecstasy” 


Professor Vaget will speak about the biographical, cultural, historical, and literary background of Wagner's tale of love and death. Hans Rudolf Vaget, was Professor of German Studies Smith College since 1967 and is now Professor Emeritus. Professor Vaget has published widely in the field of German Studies from the 18th century to the present, focusing on Goethe, Wagner, and Thomas Mann as well as music history and film.  He is the co-founder of the Goethe Society of North America and in  1994 was awarded the Thomas-Mann-Medaille for his edition of the correspondence of Thomas Mann and his American friend and patron Agnes B. Meyer.  He is also one of the chief editors of the new edition of the works, letters, and diaries of Thomas Mann.   Professor Vaget has delivered English Language introductory lectures at the Bayreuth Festival for many seasons.

Professor Barker was the recipient of a WSNC grant to facilitate the publication of his manuscript.  The book is now published and received rave reviews from Barry Millington and John Deathridge, among others.  Barker is Emeritus Professor of History – University of Wisconsin – Madison.  Come and hear about Wagner’s time in Venice, days in which the Meister wrote some of his most beautiful and profound music and . . . . the city where he died.

In this documentary, we will explore the artistry of one of the greatest singing actresses of all time – the incomparable Waltraud Meier.  Following the film, we will select from DVD’s of Meier’s greatest roles and vote for our favorite Act – will it be Ortrud Act II?  Isolde Act I? Sieglinde Act II?  Kundry?  Then we will sit back and view the WSNC member’s choice.  Join us!

Professor Hackett teaches in the School of Theatre, Film and Television at UCLA.  He has directed for the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, Royal Theatre at The Hague, Los Angeles Opera and LA Theatre Works.


Most events are open to the public. Unless otherwise noted, programs are free to members of the Society. There is a $10.00 donation requested for non-members. Please call (415) 421-4412 for additional information.
